Undergraduate Exchange Research Internship at UIUC 2023 | The NCSA – VISHC Exchange Research Program
Introduction
Faculty and Research Scientists from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, in partnership with the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC) at VinUniversity, have developed a new initiative that brings VinUni undergraduate students to NCSA for a three-month research internship. every year in the fields of data security, systems and networking, machine learning and smart healthcare. This year, we focus on multimodal biomedical representation learning for cancer diagnosis, prognosis and treatment selection. Selected students will work closely with Mayo Clinic researchers.
This research intern position is responsible for developing innovative solutions in the intersection of healthcare and data security. Selected students will be trained to improve their research skills and aim to publish their works in high-quality journals and conferences. The program also aims to prepare candidates to apply for joint 4+1 integrated programs between VinUni and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), which is ranked in the top five in the United States for computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical engineering and offers full scholarships. Faculty and research scientists from NCSA and VISHC will join in this program as co-supervisors. During three months of the internship, you will be offered a stipend of 2,000 USD per month.
Key Responsibilities
Selected candidates will work under the guidance of Faculty and Research Scientists at NCSA and VISHC. These supervisors will provide a detailed description of work and support throughout the project. Depending on each project, you will:
- Conduct data collection, and perform data processing and analysis.
- Develop data-driven approaches that could offer potential solutions in smart health and data security.
- Design, conduct and troubleshoot experiments.
- Write and publish papers in top-tier international conferences and journals.
Minimum Qualifications
- VinUni undergrad students (ME, EE and CS programs).
- Solid coding skills, with programming experience in Python, C/C++.
- Experience working in data security, data protection, biomedical and healthcare applications.
- Experience in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, NLP. Hands-on experience with
- Machine Learning and Deep Learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch).
- Fluent in English with excellent reading and writing skills. Ability to communicate your research and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

About NCSA
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is a state-federal partnership to develop and deploy national-scale computer infrastructure that advances research, science and engineering based in the United States. NCSA operates as a unit of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and provides high-performance computing resources to researchers across the country. Support for NCSA comes from the National Science Foundation, the state of Illinois, the University of Illinois, business and industry partners, and other federal agencies. NCSA provides leading-edge computing, data storage, and visualization resources. NCSA computational and data environment implements a multi-architecture hardware strategy, deploying both clusters and shared memory systems to support high-end users and communities on the architectures best-suited to their requirements. Nearly 1,360 scientists, engineers and students used the computing and data systems at NCSA to support research in more than 830 projects. For more http://www.ncsa.illinois.edu
About VISHC
The VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC) is a collaboration between VinUniversity (VinUni) and the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC or Illinois). The center was established in 2021 to conduct high-impact research on biomedical sensing, informatics, and their applications in smart healthcare. We aim at developing state-of-the-art sensing and digital technologies to provide widely accessible health monitoring and improvement for people all over the world. VISHC’s mission is to address the challenges and opportunities in modern healthcare systems, including health data analytics, medical image processing, point-of-care diagnostics, telehealth, security and privacy protection. In addition, with a funding of $13.5 million by Vingroup over ten years, we aim to train 50 Masters students, 50 Ph.D. students (25 with degrees granted by VinUni and 25 with degrees granted by Illinois), and 10 Postdoctoral Scholars from Vietnam to study and conduct research at both VinUni and Illinois.
